Adaptation to climate change impacts needed in agriculture, experts say

Chitwan- Experts and scientists at a conference organized in Chitwan have said that agriculture should be carried out in way to ensure its adaption to climate change. At an "International Conference on Ecological Impact on Agriculture, Business and Technology" organized by Agriculture and Forestry University here today, the experts pointed out that climate change has stood as a great challenge for the development of the agriculture sector.

The speakers said that increasing cases of snowmelt have resulted in soil erosion and a crisis in water supply, and urgedto develop agriculture and technology that can cope with the climate change impacts. On the occasion, National Planning Commission Member Dr Ramesh Chandra Poudel said development activities should be advanced based on nature and science. He argued that Nepal's education policy should be changed to provide technical and vocational education to as high as 70 per cent of students. Likewise, Vice Chancellor of Agriculture and Forestry University Prof Dr Punya Prasad Regmi pointed out the need for assistance to engage the university students in research works.

Experts, professors and students from Nepal, India, the USA, Indonesia, China and Australia are participating in the two-day conference. Research Director of AFU Research Directorate Dr Rishiram Kattel said that 100 representatives from different Indian universities and institutions have joined the conference. Several working papers are being presented and discussed in the conference.
