S. Korea's jobless claims rebound in July
South Korea- South Korea's jobless claims rebounded last month on higher demand in the construction, business service, wholesale and retail, and lodging and eatery sectors, government data showed Monday. The number of new applicants for job-seeking benefits was 112,000 in July, up 7.7 percent compared with the same month of last year, according to the Ministry of Employment and Labor. The number turned around after sliding in single digits in the previous month amid lingering worry about economic slowdown.
The benefit applicants increased in the construction, business service, wholesale and retail, and lodging and eatery industries, but the reading in the education service and real estate sectors fell last month. The job-seeking benefits are offered by the government to help the unemployed seek jobs, taking up a majority of unemployment benefits. It is financed by the state employment insurance fund. The number of benefit receivers totaled 653,000 in July, up 3.0 percent from a year earlier.
